NEW DELHI: Facing an Opposition offensive on price rise in the Lok Sabha on Thursday, finance minister Pranab Mukherjee rebutted the charges that government had turned a deaf ear to the concerns of the common man, saying the food inflation figure had fallen.
Mukherjee, who intervened when leader of the Opposition Sushma Swaraj made a plea for his attention during her speech on price rise, said "you are repeating the same speech. Food inflation has come down from 11.8% in week-ending October 29 to 6.6% in week-ending November 26. You were in government for six years. The country knows what you did...I am hearing every word you are saying".
When there were protests from the Opposition benches, he shot back that the leader of Opposition had yielded. "I had the food inflation figures with me, but I did not even tell the media," he said.
Swaraj, who was unrelenting in her attack, reeled out her grocery bill of December 3 and said the common man understood only what went from the pocket and not percentages.
